Reappointment Steps

Learn how purchasing a surety bond is the key to a simpler renewal!

Note: An SOS Portal account is required to renew. View the instructions on this page for help creating one. If you have any additional application questions, please call us at 1-800-864-6395.

1. Take the Continuing Education Course

As of January 1st, 2026, every notary public in the state needs to take a continuing education course and pass an assessment to renew. You can access it on the SOS Notary Portal after paying the required fee.

The online course includes four videos totaling about 45 minutes, along with a final assessment that you must complete within 30 minutes. Topics covered include a review of the latest laws and statutes related to your duties. The portal will let you know right away if you passed.

Check your email for proof of completion and send it to us. We'll need to include that when we submit your application.

2. Get a New Notary Bond

When your commission expires, so does the bond that went with it. Because most notaries need one, the SOS entered into agreements with authorized surety companies that allow them to electronically file the bond and reappointment application. That way, you only need to provide your personal information once.

Purchase our Texas notary package to:

  • Get an approved $10,000 four-year bond
  • Choose a custom color for your self-inking stamp with an updated seal
  • Let us submit your application and state filing fees

Need any other additional items, like a new notary journal? Check out our supplies store. From extra stamp ink to errors and omissions insurance, we have what you need.

Any items you order in addition to the package will be shipped to you separately.

3. Wait for the Application Confirmation

When you order our package, we use an interactive form to automatically gather the information needed to electronically file your application. This includes your name, Social Security number, ID number, contact information, and address.

This guided process protects against common submission errors, such as inconsistent names/signatures, missing a required selection, or forgetting the bond certificate.

After checkout, we'll send your application to the SOS and submit the filing fee on your behalf.

4. Complete Your Reappointment

After the SOS approves your application, they will send an email with a link to download your commission certificate. Print it, then sign it under oath in front of another notary.

If your application is denied or rejected, the SOS will explain why and outline your next steps.
