Become a North Dakota Notary

We make it simple to become a notary in North Dakota. Here are the steps you need to take to get started.

Steps for becoming a North Dakota notary

1. Meet North Dakota requirements

To become a North Dakota notary, you must meet certain requirements. The state requires notaries to be:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • A citizen or permanent legal resident of the United States
  • Able to read and write in English

You'll also need to meet one of the following residency/employment requirements:

  • Reside in North Dakota
  • Have a place of employment or practice in North Dakota
  • Reside in a county that borders North Dakota and which is in a state that extends reciprocity to a notary public who resides in a border county of North Dakota

2. Fill out our online form

Get started with our easy-to-complete, online application form. Enter your information into the form and purchase our North Dakota notary package, which includes your notary stamp and $7,500 notary bond. Pay online using our secure checkout page.

You'll receive your notary bond and stamp in the mail. Once you have received them, you can submit your official state application.

3. Complete the North Dakota Secretary of State notary application

After you have your bond and stamp, visit the Secretary of State's website to get started on your official state notary application. You will need to create an account on the state's online services portal if you haven't created one previously.

First, enter your personal information into the online application. Then print your completed application and mail it to the Secretary of State:

Secretary of State
State of North Dakota
PO Box 5513
Bismarck, ND 58506-5513

Along with your printed application, you will need to include your notary bond and a $36 check payable to North Dakota Secretary of State.

4. Get commissioned by the state

Once the state has processed your application, it will issue you a Certificate of Authorization and a Verification of Notary Stamping Device form. You will need to imprint your notary stamp on the verification form and mail it back to the Secretary of State for approval.

After the state verifies your stamp, it will mail you your official notary commission certificate. Your commission certificate will indicate when your term as a notary begins. Before you begin making notarizations, you must email a copy of your commission certificate to info@notaryofamerica.com.

Renewing your notary commission

Renewing your North Dakota notary commission is a simple process that starts with purchasing the North Dakota notary renewal package. This package includes a $7,500 notary bond for your next term and an updated notary stamp.

When you receive your notary bond and stamp in the mail, visit the Secretary of State's website and fill out your renewal application. This process is nearly identical to the process of becoming a notary. Simply print your completed renewal application and mail it to the state along with your notary bond and the $36 state renewal fee.

Mail your renewal application to:
Secretary of State
State of North Dakota
PO Box 5513
Bismarck, ND 58506-5513

Make your check payable to North Dakota Secretary of State.

Next, the state will mail you a Certificate of Authorization and a Verification of Notary Stamping Device form. You will once again affix your notary stamp to the verification form and return it to the Secretary of State. When you receive your official notary commission certificate, email a copy to info@notaryofamerica.com.
